Why Windows XP Will NOT Boot on the new Core Duo Macs
Time: 17:29 EST/22:29 GMT | News Source: apple-x.net | Posted By: Andre Da Costa

Common Misconception Since Apple announced their new iMac Core Duo and MacBook Pro yesterday at Macworld, speculation has run wild about these Macs' potential ability to boot Windows XP. We'd like to clarify the facts about the situation: At this stage, simply put, you cannot boot Windows XP on the new iMac or MacBook Pro. The first issue that must be taken into consideration is that unlike nearly all ordinary PC hardware, Apple's new Intel-based Macs use EFI, or Extensible Firmware Interface. Most PCs use BIOS, or Basic Input/Output System, and it's also what Apple's Developer Transition Kits used. EFI, like BIOS, was designed by Intel, and it's destined to become the successor to the aging BIOS technology, which was first introduced in 1981 with the original IBM PC.

Contrary to the article, even if Yonah was a 64-bit CPU, 64-bit editions of Windows would not boot unless the CPU supported the IA-64 (Itanium) instruction set. 32-bit versions of Windows and x64 versions of Windows don't support booting from EFI because it wasn't required. Vista, both 32-bit and x64 editions, do support booting from EFI.

Also, EFI support won't be backported to 32-bit XP. Mac users (and everyone else) should be able to get a 32-bit Vista CTP within the next few months.

not to mention that bios was not invented by Intel. but by IBM.

While IBM did eventually choose the intel chips for the IBM PC. BIOS was done internally at IBM.

Now EFI is a all Intel invention. for the IA 64 platform. although by verison 1.2 it has been down ported for 32 bit systems. and released to the UEFI for a more general purpose system. apple systems are more than likely using the mid release UEFI version.

we will start to see UEFI pc systems around the time that vista is released. for the reason that n4cer stated. unless major changes occur in current plans xp 32 bit and xp x64 based oses will not support efi boot layers.

Now here is the kicker, due to the layout of EFI bios is still in existance. so there is a possibility. but will have to wait and see:)
