Goldman Sachs has a new report out on the tech titans' competing platforms and ecosystems in which it starkly quantifies Microsoft's loss of share among computing devices over the past decade.
According to the report, Microsoft's operating systems have gone from 97 percent of all computing devices in 2000 - back when desktop and laptop PCs were dominant - to 20 percent expected in 2012 - when PCs, tablets and smartphones are all part of the computing-device picture.

I think the numbers would be a lot more meaningful when broken down into specific categories (e.g. phone software, tablet software, computer software, etc.).... Sure, MS may not dominate overall, but they still hold the majority of the PC market. As far as mobile computing goes... I think they should probably give up there, IMHO... As should Research In Motion. Until something comes along that totally blows Android out of the water (and history shows that such innovation is not likely to come out of MS or RIM), Google will have an overwhelming domination of the smartphone and tablet market. If MS thinks it can change that with Win Phone 7.5 or Win Phone 8, as well as Windows RT, is quite frankly laughable.
Personally, I'd rather have a Google phone and a windows tablet, but MS and tablet manufacturers are not competing on price with Google tablets, so Eff them. :-p
