Unplugged: Microsoft's secondary status in smartphones
Time: 00:00 EST/05:00 GMT | News Source: USA Today | Posted By: Robert Stein

I don't know many people who own a Windows phone or have bought a Windows tablet lately. That's a problem. Despite receiving critical acclaim for its new Windows Phone operating system and its touch-friendly Windows 8 operating system, Microsoft's efforts to compete with Apple and Google in smartphones and tablet computers which is where the device market is obviously going are simply too little, too late. The Microsoft retail store in Palo Alto, Calif., is a tumbleweed-strewn ghost town compared with nearby Apple stores.

Reality check - Microsoft continues to deliver products that nobody wants. They were late to the game with their iPod competitor...which is now defunct, late on their iPhone and tablet competitors. Although Windows 8 might get "critical acclaim" for its "touch-frienly" interface...nobody wants it.

Plus, why would anyone buy a new Windows Phone on a two year contract when support ends in July 2014???

I got a new Nokia 920 through work. It does everything I need a smart phone to do. I chose it over the iPhone 5 because of the screen size - I have poor eyesight and even worse screen typing skills so I wanted a bigger screen.

One of my only complaints from an OS standpoint is there needs to be a better way to close apps. From a device standpoint, the 920 is very slippery.

Microsoft should stop looking at US customers as ATM's. Stop having their phone partners sell "cheap" smartphones (~$200 US) in emerging markets and sell them to us also! I'd love to use one of the cheap Windows 7.8/8 phones with Straight Talk. I however, will not pay a primary carrier twice as much per month.

Open up the US market to low end Windows phones, please. And no joke about all Windows phones being low end, because it's not true. They're quite nice. I believe MS's mobile OS share would grow greatly by offering the cheaper phones to cheapskates like me.

Bob, Is that MS making that decision or the Carriers?

#5: Maybe the phone makers are influenced by the carriers and by Microsoft, to not sell cheap Windows phones in the US. But its simply stupid of HTC, Nokia, and others to not sell entry level unlocked Windows phones in the US anyway. Microsoft would do well to encourage that cheap Windows phones are readily available from Straight Talk, and activated for customers in store at Wal-Mart. The only in store choice at this time is older Android technology. Older, but it does the job. Windows phone would be better, but its not on the shelves.
