25 pathetic attempts to make .NET look bad
Time: 19:37 EST/00:37 GMT | News Source: E-Mail | Posted By: Adrian Latinak

Carlos Perez has posted 25 reasons why he thinks Java is a better platform than .NET, and I kind of feel sorry for him. Why? Because I've written like 100 lines of Java in my life and I'm pretty sure I could come up with better arguments than these. Many of Carlos's reasons are only tangentially related to the Java platform and are more about perceptions than technical excellence. That makes me sad - Java deserves better.

Carlos Perez has been spreading FUD about .NET since its release (if not before). He frequently trolls the Microsoft .NET newsgroups and sites like GotDotNet.com.

Man, I'm pissed. I just wrote an argument-by-argument response to the original 25 arguments against 25 (the link this link references). But the post was too long and AWin gave me a 500 error and I lost it :(

My summation was that none of the arguments have any merit, most are just functions of time. #11 gets an honorable mention, but is largely irrelevant.

His main argument was that Java is older and will therefore remain king forever, which is pretty stupid if you ask me.

This Carlos Perez guy doesn't seem to have a clue about .NET.

Some of the things he said (like no machine code generation, no multiple framework versions - or VMs as he calls them, even though .NET doesn't have a VM - running simultaneously, few deployment options, etc.) are simply so grossly wrong, they could only have been made up by somebody who has never done an ounce of research on .NET.

I especially like the "Future Proof" one... that one gave me a good chuckle.

#3 FUD: You're an idiot.

Also, one semantic point about the pro-.NET guy in this link, he said that Java only supports pass-by-reference for objects.

Actually, in Java and .NET, object REFERENCES are passed (objects never move from the heap, just the references get passed around) BY VALUE. That is, the value of the pointer address is passed, not a copy of the memory or anything.

C# adds the "ref" keyword which allows references to be passed BY REFERENCE (something like a pointer-to-a-pointer in C++, but not exactly).

RE HTTP 500: whenever that happens to me, I just hit back, copy the text out, copy it to notepad, paste a smaller amount back into the browser and resubmit. Then I paste the rest into a new post. With IE 6 I've never had a problem with the text not being in the <TEXTAREA> when I clicked back.
