Report: PC makers to provide free Vista-to Win-7 upgrades starting July 1
Time: 13:30 EST/18:30 GMT | News Source: | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum

In yet another indicator as to the progress of Windows 7, the Tech ARP site reported that Microsoft plans to allow PC makers to offer customers who buy Windows Vista machines as of July 1 free upgrades to Windows 7 once it ships.

It looks as if Tech ARP may have obtained internal Microsoft information on its Windows 7 Technical Guarantee program. The Web site says that Microsoft provided PC partners with a first pass draft of its Tech Guarantee documentation on December 10.

According to a December posting on the Tech ARP site, Windows Vista PCs must be purchased by end users … between July 1, 2009 through TBD (to be determined)” to qualify for the Windows 7 Tech Guarantee program. The wording notes that “OEMs may choose to offer a shorter program period within the allowed date range.”

We are offering them as part of our own assurance plan and offering now, as of 01 Jan, 2009, all systems we ship will be premium ready and provided a cost free upgrade to Win7.
Since we do the work for the customer, I don't think that a better deal is to be had.

#3: Are you doing this on your own as a service or has MS offered you a package deal already? Your offering is great.

#4, This is something we are doing on our own. I realized that a lot of companies were struggling and we wanted to do something to add clear incremental value. Similarly, we know well where the pain points are for people when they upgrade and aside from cost, the effort for a lot of small businesses is just too much and we wanted to take that away and perhaps make it easier. What we have seen is that due to Vista's delay and the bad press around it, a lot of companies simply waited too long to replace aging hardware. Many simply have to now and they cannot afford it. We wanted to help them manage that. It will cost us a little on the front end, but that matters little right now. There are people really hurting out there and it's time for the stronger ones to help out.

We have a few sayings in my company - one is: "You today, me tomorrow." It's pretty simple, I'll carry you today, because tomorrow I may be on my butt and I know you will carry me. If we don't make that real by what we do, then it is just a saying and a bunch of empty words. We have a few others, but this one applies in this case.

Anyone who bought Vista Ultimate should also get a free upgrade IMHO.

We paid for stuff we never got.

I'm sure this is like beating a dead horse, but Lloyd is working on the new version...hopefully he will have an update soon. I'm not sure what is causing the current log in problems. We (me personally too), looked into it and I can't figure it out for the life of me. It's not a server issue.. .if anyone else wants to help please let me know!

#7: We've been hearing that for almost 2 years now. Duke Nukem Forever will be out sooner, I suspect.

Edit: Not that I meant to sound ungrateful. I know that this site runs on the blood, sweat & tears of volunteers and Ketchum is generous enough to host it.

TL, all... yes, we are all volunteers and all resources, equipment, hosting, bandwidth, etc... are provided at no fee. Bob was successful in securing the source recently, and that was a fortunate and not so fortunate find. Good that we have it, but it did reveal some nasty truths.
For one, the post count is not read from the DB, but the results of a formula, which includes the forums posts - which are really where the trouble is. We wanted to archive all older forums posts - going back years... but wait.., can't..... since doing so would drop post count totals for all users and likely anger those with large numbers (not my call, but that is where it is). Ok, simple fix, right? Not really... it meant that we have to essentially re-design the DB behind the existing site, and write new code to solve this one challenge - which is what is killing site performance. Ok... move the site, which we did - to a monster of a host - which consumed every ounce of its power. That really upset my guys, who had just built the thing at great cost (TL, you will likely remember a short time ago, that despite the old site, it was running well...), see... the site also spawns DB connections by the bucket and it does not let go of them - so bump services far more often than I care to count. So as we are working on the new site, we were faced with assessing the old one and perhaps fixing it - dividing already very busy people/resources. So we re-grouped. We have to do both (obviously), but we have to take care of a lot of people - including nearly 40 charities and even a group of kids in England. To make that work economically, I created a set of tools for our commerical software - that also serve Awin dev, too. Some are small, but meaningful and others are mind-blowing (I hope). Finally, I am an old (like older than dirt old) man. So Awin will be my last work. Two things about that: It will happen - my name is bolted to that promise and 2 it will be quite unlike anything built to date - I hope, setting something of an example for people. We will publish how we did it and share the platform that it is. So there it is... where we are and where we are headed. For the record, we have about 400K of lk money in this, if that matters. I wanted to give something back to a community that I admire for so many reasons - even the people I don't agree with. Cheers, Lloyd :)

#9: Thank you. I know we frequently disagree and have shot enough arrows at each other to constitute a forest, but I do appreciate what you've done for this site.

Thank you, Lloyd. Perhaps we should just archive those forum posts..... it would be seperate from the comment posts.....? Anything to stabilize the site at this point...

What works well with the site as-is it to click on Write Comment without logging in. Write the comment and then enter your Name & Password in the boxes above the comment box to log it. Click Post and it works the first time.

Just tried it and it works. Thanks Bob.

#9, IK, I had no idea what a financial stake you had in make this site possible. Thank you!

And, as I posted just before the end of the year, thanks to all you that make this web site possible. It is one that I try to visit daily.

For example, I don't know how many times one of my folks has brought something to my attention regarding something to do with or about Microsoft and I was already aware of it because it had been mentioned on this web site. Likewise, I have brought news, an update to a program or a new product feature to my my management because I had read it here first.

This is hoping that all of you that make this web site possible have a great 2009!
