Initial sales of Windows 7, Microsoft's newest operating system, were "fantastic" in Japan and helped spur PC sales in the country, CEO Steve Ballmer said Thursday.
"We've had a great response here in Japan," he said at a Tokyo news conference. "Certainly we've seen initial sales be fantastic. The first ten days were bigger than the first ten days of XP or Vista or any other Windows launch that we have done."

Superstitious people of many cultures hold that seven is a lucky number. In Japan, many people celebrate a child's birth on the seventh day, believe in seven reincarnations, and derive seemingly endless enjoyment from watching their classic film, The Seven Samurai. It should be no big surprise if Windows 7 is a hit in Japan, as well as in many other cultures with similar beliefs in the power of seven.
Plus, I've heard that realistic pricing coupled with solid engineering can boost the sales of a product even beyond what superstitious belief alone might do ;-)
