Important Reminder Regarding Expiration of the Windows 7 RC
Time: 03:23 EST/08:23 GMT | News Source: Windows Team Blog | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum

On February 15th, people still running the Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) will receive a notification reminding them that starting March 1st, 2010, their PC will begin experiencing bi-hourly shutdowns. These shutdowns will continue through June 1st, 2010.

On June 1st, 2010, a non-genuine experience is triggered where your wallpaper is removed and “This copy of Windows is not genuine” will be displayed in the lower right corner above the taskbar. This means your PC will no longer be able to obtain optional updates or downloads that require genuine Windows validation.

Gents,

What is the best way to migrate from Win7 RC to Win7? One of my machines is about ready to "expire". I also want to know if I can then use the same OS disc to install Win7 on two more machines.

Thanks in advance.

Oldog,

To do an in-place upgrade from 7 RC to RTM do the following:

One may perform an install of Windows 7 RTM over the top of Windows 7 RC by following this method:

1. Download the ISO as you did previously and burn the ISO to a DVD.

2. Copy the whole image to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a directory on any partition on the machine running the pre-rerelease build).

3. Browse to the sources directory.

4. Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.

5. Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. For example, change 7233 to 7000.

6. Save the file in place with the same name.

7. Run setup like you would normally from this modified copy of the image and the version check will be bypassed.

There is no performance gain from doing a clean install at all. That is a myth. Once you have done your upgrade, open a command line and defrag the machine by issuing the following commands: DEFRAG C: -v -w (assuming C: is your system drive)

If you need assistance let me know.
