Dogfooding Windows 8: six long-term Windows 8 users tell all | |

Dogfooding is a term that goes back a while, but here in the tech world, it basically means using what you make. With all the talk about Windows 8 over the past few months, I was curious about how it was to really use in a real-world work environment. I wanted to find out how people who spent day-in and day-out accomplishing their daily work felt about Windows 8. Fortunately, I had a ready-made stable of lab rats, in the collected columnists here at ZDNet. Many of our IT writers have been using Windows 8 as their daily driver for quite some time, and I wanted to know what they thought of the new, somewhat-maligned OS. |

| This is all well and good. But, when a hard drive fails on a brand name Win 8 box the customer, who typically does NOT make recovery discs, will be screwed since there are no more product keys on the case sticker. Only the OEM preload image will work. There will be some upset customers in the near future that will rightfully have anger issues with both Microsoft, for stupidity in doing this, and with the OEM for not providing physical recovery discs, like the good old days of happy PC users. Of course, one could always use a program like Paragon's free Image Backup for Windows 8. But, like MS pointed out only about 5% of customers used Windows Backup and Restore. Fewer are likely to download, register and use a free program that is not built into Windows. And keep in mind that the replacement for Windows 7 Backup and Restore, "File History" does not make images, only file backups. |
