Lots of rumors and speculation circulating today that Microsoft has a smaller variant of the Surface – let's call it the Surface Mini until further notice – in the pipeline, and there's been a lot of focus on what screen size this mythical device will have. But it's not screen size that will determine whether the Surface Mini sinks or swims.
The general chit-chat hints that the Surface Mini will have a screen size of between 7.5- and 8-inches, putting it in the same ball park as Apple's iPad mini, and a smidgen bigger than Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire HD.

For me, price is not the only consideration. I made that mistake with a Nexus 7. It was a mistake because our small business wants to move from costly (we pay all rebates, mile, and money back to the customer. The bank pays squat) merchant scan credit card system to Square with a predictable flat per transaction fee. The problem is that the Nexus 7 has the wrong headphone plug, no mic in, so the Square reader won't work with it. Our next purchase looks like an iPad mini, when our contract ends in October, or a Surface mini or a Windows phone if compatible with Square, and Square has an app for it. Right now Windows is not supported by Square. That just plain sucks and tells me that Microsoft isn't paying enough attention to how mobile devices are being transitioned to by small businesses, or is simply clueless. Price and usability is what matters. If Square works with an upcoming Surface mini, I'm getting one ASAP.
