They probably don't mind because if you wanted your movie shown in theathers (as opposed to online distribution, or direct-to-video), they are probably somewhere in the distribution chain. Also, most theathers only show rated movies (guess who rates the movies).
Most people would probably sell the film rights anyway if offered enough money, greater exposure, a chance to direct larger budget films, etc..
