I wonder if this means that the next version of Windows will have built-in software support for TV tooners. The main thing I hate about all the current TV Tooners is that their software stinks!

agreed #1, I hope they have cross compatible tv tuner software, it just stinks today and M$'s media center is an excellent product but it uses proprietary hardware and it isn't sold individually.

everytime I see "longhorn" written, all I want to do is give a "Yee-ha!" cowboy style... weird.

Linux is already there. One more reason why Windows Suxxors.

#4 How can a kernel have all those things?

#4, I don't know what you think Linux has but it is not built-in TV tuner support, which is what we are talking about. Anyway, as #5 was trying to say in a joking way, the term Linux refers only to the Kernal, which doesn't even have sound support.

Man I hope Windows get's a new updated UI. I'm guessing there is a 99% chance it won't though. Windows XP only got new icons and a Start Bar. Longhorn will probably only get new icons and a Side Bar. Apple did it, why can't Microsoft. Sure companies will have to rewrite their programs but I think the current 10 year old look is badly in need of an overhaul.

#7 I think Longhorn will get a new UI. Paul Thurott just posted a review of the latest Longhorn build but he gave a lot of info on what will be coming up in the future with Longhorn. It seems like these beta's have barely scratched the surface.

You're right about the Longhorn alphas just scratching the surface. Longhorn will have a new UI with new features, functionality and underlying technology.

XP got more than new icons and a new Start bar, but there was no need for a complete overhaul of the UI because XP was a point release to Windows 2000. For home users running 9x, it was a major upgrade, but compared to 9x, the UI changes in XP were pretty major. Longhorn is the first major Windows release for the unified codebase, and it will get the UI, and other technology updates, to show it.

This could be significant for the pro music industry, which is still dominated by Apple, so I welcome it, provided 3rd parties are going to support this platform.

#5, #6 Whilst you are both correct in saying that Linux refers to just the kernel, the majority of people call the whole distribution "Linux".

Why couldn't a kernel have a gui subsystem? or integrated sound support? drivers? tv tuner? Sure it would make it a bloated and poorly designed kernel, but there's nothing stopping you from doing that.
