  Microsoft to Simplify Patching
Time: 12:38 EST/17:38 GMT | News Source: TechNews.com | Posted By: Byron Hinson

Microsoft will next month begin beta testing its new patch installer, which promises automatic updates for a number of products. The technology is designed to simplify the patch management process - welcome news in light of problems caused by last week's Blaster worm that exploits a flaw in Windows systems. Microsoft Installer 3.0 is a unified update tool for several products, including Office, Excel and SQL Server. It will be followed by an installer for versions of Windows.

Did I miss the announcement that Excel was no longer part of Office?

This isn't necessarily a revamp of Windows Update (although, that is coming), it's a revamp to the entire patching mechanism. Essentially MSI 3.0 will be used as the patching solution for all Microsoft products, instead of the SP installer for NT, and the SP installer for Office, and the QFE installer for this, that and the other thing.

From now (well, not right this minute) on, it'll all be MSI 3.0, which means that the morons who didn't patch the SQL server against Slammer won't be able to say "but installing the patch is too hard" anymore.

It's not really about WindowsUpdate, per se, JWM. It's about Microsoft's patching methodology for all of it's software. Right now, Microsoft has about 8 different patching methodologies making a clear, consice way to patch your Microsoft software a little difficult. The "moron" SQL Server admins weren't wrong in saying that the SQL Server patch was hard to install (it's still no excuse, IMHO... that's what they're paid for). That's also why WindowsUpdate only updates Windows - it's set up for the Windows methodology, which is incompatible with Office, SQL Server, and pretty much everything else that MSFT makes.

By choosing MSI 3.0 as a standard methodology for it's product patches, in theory, all patches could be applied from one source - "MicrosoftUpdate".

Aside from that, MSI 3.0 has some interesting enhancements just for patching. This should be just what the doctor ordered.

I agree with #2. There's nothing wrong with the current Windows Update.

Well, other than the fact that it's down right now, and hasn't been functioning for at least 3 days.
