Facing strong competition in online travel reservations, Sabre Holdings Corp. decided to overhaul its technology — allocating $100 million on a risky, new approach. Sabre replaced its mainframes with low-end servers and open-source software. Sabre, which expects sales of some $2 billion this year, was one of the first big companies to move to open source. But others are doing likewise, a trend that's reverberating through the tech industry.

$100 million is an incredible amount of a corporate development project.

I wonder how much they actually saved by using open source? I mean he's comparing his costs to running MVS mainframe stuff, which we all know is expensive.

bluesky - I doubt $100M is pocket change, but it's probably not terribly unexpected over a 4 year period.

But labor is where all your project costs are.
