Xbox 2 to Use Proprietary Discs?
Time: 15:26 EST/20:26 GMT | News Source: E-Mail | Posted By: Brian Kvalheim

Microsoft's career page contains a very interesting job advertisement. The ad says that the Xbox Team "is looking for a strong PM/Engineer to manage the design and development of the Xbox Game Disc for the next generation Xbox console." Moreover, the ad stresses the importance of anti-piracy technology in the development of the new discs for the next generation console. Although it is possible that MS will simply try to incorporate sophisticated anti-piracy features in the now standard DVD medium, it is probably easier for them to develop a proprietary format. Nintendo did it with their GameCube discs, and they were quite effective in combating piracy -- so why not Microsoft?

I read this article and I sure hope not, it would ruin the gaming vendors support for the system. I hope his job is related to something else. Maybe prioprietary discs at Xbox version 4, because by then Microsoft will have locked the market down. If it does this now, when it isn't the market leader, it will never be the market leader.

The GC-disc-format workt very well in combating piracy (it is possible to run copied software on the Gamecube but only if you link it up to your pc) so I think that it's a great idea to use a native disc-format. Wouldn't surprise me if Sony is going to introduce some kind of prioprietary disc format for the ps3 too.

It is highly unlikely that Xbox 2 will have anything but a custom DVD-style disc, just like Xbox 1. The biggest reason being that it would likely make the Xbox 2 incompatible with the Xbox 1 games, which would be a disaster.

They will lose far more money using this tatic than they will to piracy.

With Xbox Live!, piracy isn't as much of an issue because checks can be done to ensure that only valid copies of the game play on Live!. I would say the vast majority of Xbox 2 games will be Live! enabled.

RMD: But you also must remember that Microsoft is going to be using a PPC chip instead of x86 in the next XBox.

Plus, I am sure they will have a way to put in their proprietary disc as well as the ability to drop a standard DVD into the same drive (much like min-discs work today).
