Every now and then a new technology appears that will "change everything." This is that technology.
WinFS will be the most important innovation since the GUI. I know it is years away, but I am already excited about getting my hands on this technology. Imagine how powerful it will be to standardize the way data is stored across all applications and to be able to access and manipulate this data using metadata (XML tags, I suppose).
This is definitely the next big thing.

The problem with great radically new technologies such as this one, is that it takes so long for the software industry to adjust. I'm guessing it will be 2010 before WinFS is fully used by most apps.

You might be right, but the fact that Office 12 will use it (pure speculation), will be an incredible boost.

I'm guessing that Office 12 will not be the Longhorn version of Office.
MS seems to like to have a new version of Office every 18 months to two years. Because Longhorn is such a larger upgrade to Windows, I'm guess that its release will correspond with the release of a new version of Office (Like Windows 2000 and Office 2000). Unless Longhorn is going to be released far sooner then we expect, I don't see MS waiting for Longhorn before they update Office again.
Maybe I’m wrong and MS will push Office 2003 along until the next version of Windows.

Did anyone else find the reference to 2007 odd? I wonder if there is any meaning behind this date? I’m still crossing my fingers and hoping to see Longhorn by the end of next year.
