Linux To Reduce Boot Time for Windows XP Media Centers
Time: 12:57 EST/17:57 GMT | News Source: TechNewsWorld.com | Posted By: Joshua Baer

The new Linux-based InstantOn software -- designed to help Windows XP Media Center Edition PCs boot more quickly -- is aimed at taking advantage of the power of Intel's Pentium processors, not at fixing fragmented hard drives. The software integrates into the computer's BIOS and the operating system.

Is this really all that useful? I have a Media PC in my den and I have never turned it off - its been on for the last 6 or 7 months - I couldn't tell you how long it will take to boot up - don't care.

At work boot times are not important either. We leave workstations on 24/7. The reason is there are operations being performed on them and operations those are scheduled for after hours. For example, if there is an upgrade to a program, a security patch, etc. SMS sends it to the workstation over night so that it is ready to be used the next morning. Antiv-virus scans and pattern file downloads, disk cleanup and defrag chores are also scheduled and run every night. Even if our workstations were booted up in the morning, what consumes most of the time until the computers can be used are scripts, etc. being downloaded to the OS as it starts up from the domain servers.

Likewise, my home office computers are kept on 24/7 for some of the tasks above, plus if I need to get something for a personal matter while at work I can do so.

And, by the way, boot times have been reduced in each new version of the Windows operating system. Also, Microsoft, Intel, the major hardware verdors and BIOS vendors are working to reduce boot times. That effort may be incorporated into computers as early as next year. Whether these new innovations will allow "instant on" remains to be seen.

This article reeks of desperation.

I can speed up the boot time on the Windows Media Center machines by formatting the harddrive and installing DOS 6.0.

But that's not the point of the Media Center machines, and they know it.

#5 "Ahh. You equate charging for software with prostitution. What a moron."

And you say other people have a potty mouth?

"I assume you steal the computers you run Linux on. And you steal the food you eat. And you are squatting in an abandoned building. And you are stealing the power and internet services you need to post on this forum."

READ what he wrote! He is AGAINST open source, he is AGAINST accepting/taking things for free as it is "destroying the livelihoods of hard-working, American['s]". So he doesn't STEAL anything as that is AGAINST what he believes in, he pays for everything as he is opposed to having things for free. But nice straw man!

#9 I'm not saying that "getting paid for software = prostitution", all I said was that it's hypocritical of you to go around accusing others of having a potty mouth whilst calling other people moron's on the side. ClosedStandards view point was that he is against ANYTHING that's free, and that includes sex. Obviously I highly doubt he was serious, but rather I'm sure he was trying to illustrate a point (that you don't have to be against everything that's free!) - maybe you missed it. So no I don't associate paying for software and paying for sex, and neither would most people, but it is a way of illustrating a point (note I didn't say the BEST way of illustrating a point).

"If the internet had been up to the OSS crowd to invent, we'd still be waiting."
It's funny you say this given how much you love Microsoft! Have you read Bill Gates' book? You know the one where he doesn't think much of the internet? Guess it's a good thing that all those other companies around showed him the light!

#11 "ClosedStandards=kabuki?"

No sorry, but I will admit that I have enjoyed some of ClosedStandards comments. Whilst being completely over the top, some of them are entertaining, and some of them do illustrate just how silly the whole view that OSS is evil/virus-like is! Just as silly as the views shared by some that ALL proprietary software must be replaced with OSS!

#12 Is that the time from typing in your password or the time from hitting the power button? And is that to the moment you can see the desktop or the moment that everything finishes loading? Because I'd be very impressed if that's from the power button as my computer can't do it in 20 seconds (although I will admit that I do have a lot of applications run on startup, mainly norton and bluetooth apps).
