Time: 08:57 EST/13:57 GMT | News Source: TechWeb | Posted By: Robert Stein

Unwilling to give up the fight against Microsoft Office -- the planet's most dominant business productivity suite -- Corel on Monday unveiled its newest alternative, WordPerfect Office 12, which will ship in late April. Most of the changes to WordPerfect Office 12 -- which consists of the WordPerfect word processor, the Quattro Pro spreadsheet, and WordPerfect Presentations slide-show maker -- are in the area of increased compatibility with Microsoft Office's Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications, said Wendy Lowe, the suite's product manager.

What about Outlook? It seems that Corel gave up developing an alternative PIM and this is one of the most important program of the Office suite. Also is it really cheaper? Office is $399 with Outlook where Corel Suite costs $299 and you have to buy OK separately; plus Office license allows two installations of the product: one on the desktop and one on the laptop, does Corel offer the same?

So IMO is neither useful nor cheaper.

"Personally, I don't see any advantages for a Microsoft Office user, to migrate to WordPerfect Office,"

Doesn't WordPerfect cost less."

Not for upgrade users. It's $149 either way. At that price why not stay with MS? Or go to OOo for free.

Halc: I'm sorry, but I can't stand doing things in other suites, and I'm just a college student. Office just has certain niceties that no other suite has (things like smart tags, the sidebar, etc...)
