How exactly do you stop a much awaited, overly hyped software release from the billion dollar Redmond giant Microsoft? The Open Source front has no definite strategy on how to catch the raging bull by its ‘Longhorn’, but is closely following the “If you cant beat ‘em, join ‘em” mantra. Microsoft’s Longhorn release is slated for 2006, and the Linux desktop segment is in the firing line to be gored in its tracks. With a gradually developing market, the acceptance of Linux at the desktop level is still relatively low, and the last thing that Linux vendors need is a new OS from Microsoft.

“If you cant beat ‘em, join ‘em”
More like, "If you can't beat `em, copy `em."

More like, "If you can't beat `em, copy `em."
Are you suggesting Microsoft doesn't copy other technologies?

Gotta say, I'm getting more and more tired of reading about Linux and how it's going to defeat the great evil Microsoft.
Just that every day which goes by this is looking less and less likely. Most of the people I know who were using Linux have now stopped with the release of Windows XP.

#2, of course they have in some ways (they are hardly alone), and many people have chastised them for it. But when it happens on the Linux platform, those same mouths are silent. Call a spade a spade.

i wish the tech writers would hurry up and transition their "microsoft will die at the hands of..." articles to GOOGLE. Its been over a year of LINUX, LINUX, LINUX. But no matter how much free publicity they give it, it aint gonna happen.

Ballmer/MSFT looks at Linux, etc not as a potential killer to them. Rather, its the difference between MSFT having a 10% versus 12% growth rate. Their product and patent portfolio is far too broad to be "killed" by a single app.

thats how they treat most well-funded (and linux IS funded) threats. Think AOL. Think Apple. Think Oracle. Think Lotus 123.
