  Microsoft co-operates with email rivals

IN A RARE mood of co-operation, software giant Microsoft has blended its e-mail sender authentication scheme with a competing standard. The aim is to get a standard that can defeat spam by forcing emails to reveal the IP address they are sent from. If adopted by the Engineering Task Force (IETF) Sender ID would serve as an e-mail authentication system that verifies the message actually originated with the purported address.
