Iain is one of the most colorful characters at Microsoft. He ran the "war room" for Windows XP. Basically, any changes to the operating system had to go through him and his team -- and it all happened in this small room over in building 26.

Iain and Ian are both perfectly valid names in and of themselves. In fact, Iain is the original Gaelic name that Ian was derived from.

Ok, let me spell it out for you.
http://www.ireland-information.com/heraldichall/irishboysnames.htm
Eoin / Seán, Iain : An Irish form of the name John
Ian / Ion : Iain is the Scottish-Gaelic form of Eoin, and thus John
Again, both perfectly valid names, neither of them incorrect. I can't help it if you don't know the etymology of your progeny's name, but you certainly can avoid looking like a total fool by thinking arrogantly that there is only one correct way to spell it.
Here's another fine example from the following site:
http://www.medievalscotland.org/problem/names/iain.shtml
"The modern Scottish Gaelic form Iain appeared sometime after 1600, perhaps not until the 19th century, probably having evolved in the northern dialect of Gaelic. Ian, an English form of that name, appeared in the 19th century."
Note that I never said Ian was the wrong way to spell it; you are the one who is fixated on stating that "Ian" is the only "correct" way to spell the name. Wrong. Thanks.
