News is leaking out that Microsoft may be considering integrating media center functionality into the standard release of the next Windows operating system, codenamed Longhorn.
Currently XPMCE is sold as a separate product to XP Home and XP professional, but this new development would mean that a PC could be multifunction e.g. a laptop would be a media center when docked, but a tablet PC when undocked.
This would go some way towards placing Microsoft at the center of the digital home as users would be more likely to use functionality built into their existing OS, than switch to another, however similar.

Or MS could offer it as a download option (like Media Player 10 or Movie Maker 2) that would be nice :)

#5 Parkker is right on with this one - boutique builders "are" favoring MCE 2005 only builds in response to consumer demand. No other OS makes sense and we have turned in this direction for home users, too. Albeit we are puny by any standard, we do see little interest in non-MCE systems for home users. Each wants a broad range of media experiences and MCE provides for them within an easier to use interface. Media Extenders also help drive this - users find out that they can move live and recorded TV around their homes without PC's or individual media recorders and the units sell quickly.
AV form factors are most desired - especially with fan-less PSU's and CPU heatsinks.
Each of us that has more than one PC, and this is key, would not consider a second or third system that was not an MCE. This is very consistent among our client and user base where increasingly, we hear users looking for MCE as a second, third, or fourth PC. We also note that at least two PC's in each home is very common with three to four PC's being the next largest group. MCX Extenders are seen as a way to get the best that Media PC's offer into each room, w/o the complexity of a PC being in that room. Cost has not been mentioned nearly as frequesntly as one might have expected.
