For the first time in three years, software giant won't update the OS.
Microsoft for the first time in three years plans to go without a new release of Windows XP Media Center Edition, a company spokesperson says.
Instead, Microsoft plans to offer an update to Media Center Edition 2005 to refine some features, says Microsoft Product Manager Tom Laemmel, speaking in an interview at the CeBIT tradeshow here. That update would be "bigger than your standard Windows update, but smaller than a Service Pack," he says.
An update instead of a new release should please existing Media Center users. An upgrade to a newer version of the operating system has been a hassle, often requiring the user to buy a complete new copy of the product.

"An upgrade to a newer version of the operating system has been a hassle, often requiring the user to buy a complete new copy of the product."
And exactly WHO's fault is that?
It's a hassle only because it's MADE to be a hassle.

And we realize that it has been an issue, therefore, we're releasing a feature pack and bug-fix update in the form of a smaller package rather than a newly branded build. So we are working to fix the problems that we've identified as a result of our customer feedback.
Now... given that, and the fact that the quote you provided was the AUTHOR's opinion, not a statement made by Tom, what is your point?
Once again, yet another individual who claims to know everything about Microsoft and their practices chimes in with a comment that only reinforces my belief that 9 out of 10 people speak from their own mythical almighty podium of knowledge when in reality, they're utterly clueless.

uhh... upgrade....needing another puchased version....
Nope. Bought original...upgraded to 2004 Harmony - easy as verifying I had a Genuine product...upgraded again to 2005 Symphony...one email, same verification and received an update CD. I have not heard of any OEM's doing differently. Not bad for a Media Center that is two years old....updated twice in as many years for the cost of shipping [8 bucks].
What more could one want from either MS, or its partners? I mean, really...what other manufacturer of any type provides anything similar...auto manufacturers? durable goods manufacturers? home electronics?
I do not understand some of the things I read here - help!
