Microsoft the company should big improve Word grammar check. No, your eyes aren't deceiving you. That sentence is a confusing jumble. However, it is perfectly fine in the assessment of Microsoft Word's built-in grammar checker, which detects no problem with the prose. The University of Washington associate professor has embarked on a one-man mission to persuade the Redmond company to improve the grammar-checking function in its popular word-processing program. Krishnamurthy is also trying to raise public awareness of the issue. |

It's a shame that many people do not take grammar and spelling seriously today. The proliferation of leet speak, text message abbreviations, and lack of punctuation and capitalization are all indications that we are producing a mass of linguistic incompetents. I'm still amazed at how so many people I deal with on a daily basis have writing skills comparable to an elementary school student.
With examples like that passing through unflagged, Krishnamurthy questions whether Microsoft should even offer the grammar-checking feature in its existing state. Good. Take it out and force people to learn how to write. "If you're a grad student turning in your term paper, and you think grammar check has completely checked your paper, I have news for you -- it really hasn't," he said. I've had teachers that would fail you if you had more than one spelling, punctuation or grammatical mistake. The ability to write is critical to success. |

I thought it was interesting that Word Perfect caught more grammatical errors than Word. Microsoft comes off as defensive about the issue because it is "difficult". I sympathize with foreign students studying in the US that speak English adequately but try to improve on their writing by using Word’s built-in grammar checker for their missives.
