  Apple's Intel Desktop Move Threatens Linux Desktop, Longhorn
Time: 10:08 EST/15:08 GMT | News Source: eWeek | Posted By: Chris Hedlund

Opinion: And if the Linux desktop wants to play, it had better get a lot better, a lot faster.

Linux desktop and Longhorn developers suddenly have something in common: They should be worried, very worried, about Mac OS X coming to Intel processors. The Mac community is in an uproar over Apple moving the Mac to Intel processors, but it's the Linux desktop and Longhorn programmers who should be reaching for the aspirin. Mac OS X is not only the best desktop interface for Unix-style operating systems, it's the best desktop interface around—period.

#1--yes, it will be very interesting to watch how they retrench this time. Before OS 10, OS 9 was the best thing since sliced bread, had no faults, and blew away Windows. Then after OS 10, without flinching, it was as if the wall fell and they could now freely and openly criticize the predecessor. The MacOS only has faults when compared with newer versions of the MacOS.

Irony-challenged? Nah....

On a side note, I can't really understand all the questions regarding which Intel processor Apple will use. Since Jobs was discussing performance per Watt, I don't see how there can be any question whether or not it's the Pentium 4. It has to be the Pentium M, or something based on the Pentium M.

Interesting Pentium M vs. Pentium 4 report:

darthservo/bluvg... yes the mac crowd retrenches each time... but each time their noise gets a little harder to hear. There's just alot less of them these days.

I second the comment by quux.

IMHO -
linux=geek box
OSX=benz box
XP/Longhorn=the rest of the world
games=Xbox/PS3

BTW - Been playing around with SuSe 9.3.

Diagnosis - Needs work. Driver support still sucks. Prognosis - Poor. Suggest - Wait for 10.0
