Big Plans Ahead For Microsoft Office "14"
Time: 20:43 EST/01:43 GMT | News Source: *Linked Within Post* | Posted By: Andre Da Costa

As stated, the codename for the upcoming release of Office, currently slated for a 2009/2010 release timeframe, is Office “14.” Extending on the mention of superstition in the description of this article, in response to a comment regarding “Office 13” in a TechNet radio chat in December of 2006, Eric Vigesaa, Program Manager for Office system client applications, stated “well, 13 is unlucky, so we’re calling it Office 14,” so the next time someone wants to question Microsoft’s belief in superstition, one need not question any further. Naturally, with the beginning of a project comes planning… and in the world Microsoft lives in, it takes money to make the planning come alive; LOTS of it, so just how much is Microsoft committing to spend on Office “14?” 20% in R&D funding than Office “12” with total R&D expenditure expected to be around $930 million PER YEAR!

Can we at least deploy Office 2007 first? Jesus Christ, we've got people out there who've just installed Offce 2003 literally within the past few months...

...and they better 'ribbonize' the entire suite across the board or I'll be pissed.

Well, 2010 is a far way off, if you need a new machine now or want to upgrade for the new functionality version 2007 offers, you will, either by purchasing it with a new PC or getting it on your PC at work. I just hope they fix the "cut off borders" in Word 14, been getting that since Word 97, and its not my printers fault.

Without a doubt, Office 2007 is by far an absolute must have...

Puttting a little MS Bob into the ribbon will make it compelling. Or, at least make OpenOffice look even better. For me, Access is the only remaining necessary app in Office. The rest are commodity programs.

Is that R&D expenditure number supposed to impress us? All it does for me is make me shudder.

Chris, it's not like you have to buy every version.... why do people freak out over this?

#8 By testman (243 Posts) at 2/14/2007 4:24:59 AM
#1 Calm down. Use your sense, it's only right for Microsoft to consider the next product in the suite, not just suddenly stop. As someone has already said, you don't have to buy every single version you know!

My understanding based on a response I got at the Mac Mojo MSDN blog, the Mac Office Team won't be skipping versions and will be heading to version 13 after Office 2008. As for Office 14, a lot of its functionality is going beyond the desktop applications with more focus on information, so its more emphasis on the Server tools it seems for the next release.

No kidding #1 :)

While people are still trying to figure out how to finance Vista/Office 2007, Microsoft is already building it's next revenue enhancement scheme.

Hasn't this company ever heard of STABILIZING things ?

Personally, I do NOT want to see another new OS or Office package for at LEAST 5 years. We need to stabilize where we are first.

Name one company that waits 5 years to build a new program or OS. You stabilize yourself by skipping a release if you need to. Who cares if they release every 3 years. I didn't know that just because a new version of office comes out your are forced to run it. You shouldn't expect MS to stop development just because it makes it easier on you. If you are running XP or Office 2003 nothing is forcing you to go to vista or office 2007. Just go to every other release. Most businesses do this now as it is.

People are shuch whiners - microsoft take 5-6 years getting Vista out the door and the biatch. the go to standard 2-3 years cycles and everyone is up in arms. I didn't relaized they had shortened support to 3 years also - oh wait they haven't so there is no reason why you can't run something until standard support is cut off.

You do realize there are companies still running stable Win2K platforms, right?

Some even run Win98, though I fully agree that's ridiculous.

You really must understand. A major OS/Office change for a company of 50,000 employee's is an undertaking that simply cannot be underestimated. It can take years just to roll out fully.

I still run Office 97 and 2000 on most of my computers. People flocking to these new office versions as if they can suddenly compose a document they couldn't before makes me chuckle.

#7: it's not like you have to buy every version

So, very true.

#2: and they better 'ribbonize' the entire suite

I'm waiting for the menu and toolbar randomization feature. Not only will the menus and toolbars be randomly docked around the application, the sequence of the items will change at each invocation. (This, of course, is designed to allow users to become acquainted the many "new features" added to each version.)

#10: Hasn't this company ever heard of STABILIZING things ?

Don't you be thinking of stabilizing the cash cow! This cow is moving and changing! Growing! It makes better milk now! You have to have this new cow! Moo.
