Richard Charkin is an unrepentant thief. Charkin, a UK executive with publisher Macmillan, attended last week's Book Expo America in New York and decided to make his feelings about Google Book Search clear by teaching Google a lesson: he stole two of the company's laptops.

Very bad analogy. It's not theft, it's infringement. But I see where he's going: it's easier to mock-up theft to prove a point than IP infringement.

All of these big media execs mis-characterize infringement as theft as that will get them more sympathy when they're crying in front of Congress for new laws.

"Lessig also points out that making a copy of a digital work is essentially different from stealing someone's laptop; when the laptop disappears, the user no longer has access to it and has lost something important and costly. The same is not true when Google scans a book. "
Would Lessig allow Charkin to remove the hard drive from the laptop, copy it, and post all the info on the web if he returned the laptop and drive?

I once stole a pair of underwear from a woman. I taught her a lesson!

#1 The **AA use the exact same flawed analogy - works well on the idiots who don't know any better.
#4 I don't want to know what she learnt from that!
