Facebook and Microsoft Expand Strategic Alliance
Time: 00:27 EST/05:27 GMT | News Source: Microsoft Press Release | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum

Facebook and Microsoft Corp. today announced that the two companies would expand their advertising partnership and that Microsoft will take a $240 million equity stake in Facebook’s next round of financing at a $15 billion valuation. Under the expanded strategic alliance, Microsoft will be the exclusive third-party advertising platform partner for Facebook, and will begin to sell advertising for Facebook internationally in addition to the United States.

“We are pleased to take our Microsoft partnership to the next level,” said Owen Van Natta, Chief Revenue Officer, Facebook. “We think this expanded relationship will allow Facebook to continue to innovate and grow as a technology leader and major player in social computing, as well as bring relevant advertising to nearly 50 million active users of Facebook.”

“Making this investment and expanding this partnership will position Microsoft and Facebook to better take advantage of advertising opportunities around the world, and is a great win for not only for our two companies, but also our collective users and advertisers,” said Kevin Johnson, president of the Platforms & Services Division at Microsoft. “We have partnered well over the past year and look forward to doing some exciting things together in the future. The opportunity to further collaborate as advertising partners is a big reason we have decided to take an equity stake, and is a strong statement of our confidence in the long-term economics of this partnership.”

$15B is far too much, this early on. But $240M is about 10 days of msft profit. And that seems a small price to pay for the exclusive ad inventory. Plus they get 1.6% of the company too.

I believe Facebook, MySpace, Windows Live Spaces are a short term fad.

I don't think they're a fad, but they're certainly overvalued.

AWBrian: I believe Facebook, MySpace, Windows Live Spaces are a short term fad.

I sure hope so. These sites are ridiculous. Look at me! I'm on the web! I have friends, too!

latch: ...they're certainly overvalued.

No kidding. For even more laughs, figure out how much each user is worth based on an inflated valuation.

Microsoft value per user: $461 (assume ~650 million unique users)
Facebook value per user: $789 (assume ~19 million unique users)

And, the Facebook value per user is more likely to skyrocket as the frenzy builds.

(How about "TechFace" by lketchum, et al. anyone?)

#4, there were/are numerous tech exchanges that pre-date any of these, but the goals were/are different - namely, there are goals on the tech sites - I can see none on any of these social networking sites.

But you're right - we do need a better exchange of people and talent - I do doubt that we'd see get nearly as high a valuation, though. We're really struggling with the new forums and boards - about how to enable such exchanges and differentiate Awin's from other forums. I think we have some great ideas, but we haven't mixed them well, yet. We'll press on until we get it just right.

On a serious note - these sites are pathetic. I see no good coming from them whatever, and what were difficult to achieve social and interpersonal skills, now seem unlikely to be developed at all in young people. It is easier and requires less effort to "txt" or drop a poorly written blob of text into such a page, than the effort required to actually speak and or engage with a person. So many young ones have mobile phones, but they rarely speak into them - they are little txt machines.

There is a real danger here... our language is being undermined and that can and likely will have a profound impact on our country and in my case, our grand children and great grand children. Ask your kids this question: "Name a four letter word for intercourse"
I hope and I mean this, I pray that they answer back with, "Talk" - but I bet you all get more giggles and looks of surprise than anything else - or more sadly, a look which reflects a lack of understanding for even one meaning of the word - much less its most important one.
