Hi, Mike Nash here from the Windows Product Management group at Microsoft. Today we are excited to announce that we have released Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista to manufacturing (RTM) for our first set of languages (English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese).
Service Pack 1 is a very important milestone because it addresses many of the key issues that our customers have identified with Windows Vista over the last year both, directly and through programs like the Customer Experience Improvement Program. With Service Pack 1, we have made great progress in performance, reliability and compatibility. One of the great things about my job is that I get to play with the latest builds of our products -- I've personally been running Windows Vista SP1 pretty exclusively for a few months and I've noticed that my systems run faster and more reliably than they did with the "Gold" release of Windows Vista.

6 weeks?
I've gotten rebates quicker than that :)
I sure hope its up on TechNet long before that. If not, what the hell do I pay $300 a year for?

Yep, it's released to manufacturing, final, and Gold, and you too can download it -- in 6 weeks. So, once again, MS shafts its few Vista users by making them wait until the retail rollout of SP1 on new systems even though they could (& should) be downloading & installing now.

What is the reasoning behind announcing RTM and then holding it back for 6 weeks?

Few Vista users? ahh latch singing the same old tune. You do know that Vista has more market share then all non MS OSes combined. My guess is that makes it quite a few users. What are you worried about anyways you are not running Vista.

#1 I'm too busy upgrading my Longhorn boxes to worry about Vista. I can wait for SP1.

#4: Everything is relative. Compared to non-Vista, there are few users. And no, I don't know that Vista has more marketshare than all other non-MS OSes combined. What are you using to base that on, the phony MS sales figures for Vista that included OEM licenses not sold at retail?
And it doesn't affect me right now, but so what? Am I not allowed to have an opinion on something that doesn't directly affect me? For that matter, how does the SP1 delay not affecting me affect you?

Vista SP1 may only be available to the giant partners. It is not yet available for download on the Microsoft Partner Program web site as of 1:15 PM Central Time 2-4-08.

#8: I have no idea who those guys are or how they compile the data for their pretty graphs, but it's on the Internet so it must be true.

would you like me to set up a meet and greet so you can get to know them and have a chat about the way they compile their stats? or better yet maybe you could click once and go to the main page and read about their methodology
http://marketshare.hitslink.com/
or possibly use a search engine to look up some info yourself. They are a widely used firm for tracking overall trends.
I will be waiting for you to post up some info backing up the fact that there are few Vista users or at the very least that the link I posted is wrong. It is amusing that you slag someone for posting info to back up what they are saying when you are the last one to do it yourself.

#10 Wow.
8.73 out of 55 (the percentage of Windows users on Distrowatch) = 15.8%
15.8% of Windows users visiting Distrowatch ware running Vista.
Almost 1 in 6.

8-15 users per hundred is a few, figuratively & relatively speaking.
MS should release the SP now if it is indeed what they plan to ship. Otherwise, it was all just a big 'psyche!!' until 6 weeks from now.

What are you .. Wesley Snipes tax accountant?
Latch: "Wesley only owes the IRS a few dollars".
Actually, its 80-150 million users assuming Windows is used by a billion people.
