Windows Vista SP1 includes a number of enhancements over the original Vista release in the areas of application compatibility, device support, power management, security and reliability. You can see a detailed list of the changes in the Notable Changes in Windows Vista Service Pack 1 whitepaper that you can download here. One of the improvements highlighted in the document is the increased performance of file copying for multiple scenarios, including local copies on the same disk, copying files from remote non-Windows Vista systems, and copying files between SP1 systems. How were these gains achieved? The answer is a complex one and lies in the changes to the file copy engine between Windows XP and Vista and further changes in SP1. Everyone copies files, so I thought it would be worth taking a break from the “Case of…” posts and dive deep into the evolution of the copy engine to show how SP1 improves its performance.

Wow! It only took MS 15 months to iron out the most basic of Operating System functionality.

and it only took rxcall 92 minutes to think of something witty.
93 minutes, sounds like a good idea, next time.

I'm just keepin' it real Moore. Whether it's pro MS or anti MS, I call em like I see em.
You have to admit that this is something they should have corrected prior to Vista's release.

4 - I've been a beta tester with MS for quite some time now. SP1 is worthwhile but its not the "be all, to end all" as some people might think... the Vista core is perfectly fine, stable and fast - provided you're running the correct drivers.
Before anyone says something, the correct drivers are the 3rd party manufacturers responsibility NOT Microsoft's. 3rd party manufacturers have had YEARS to make the new drivers and get them right, heck, nVidia are STILL releasing beta drivers!!! How useless is that?!.
Before anyone says anything about requiring new drivers because Microsoft changed the graphics and audio subsystems - IT HAD TO BE DONE! If you don't think it had to be done, then you shouldn't be using a computer because you should know better... e.g. over 50% of all XP BSODs were due to the graphics drivers running in ring 0 and because of the 3rd party manufacturers being unable to program to save their life, WHEN they crashed (not IF!), they'd take out the whole OS.
The same also goes for audio drivers... Microsoft HAD to change these core systems (graphics & audio) to improve stability... once the new drivers start making proper use of all the new graphics improvements you will thank Microsoft for forcing this change.

#5: Why fix it when MS has legions of apologists like Ketchum & parkkker who will deny the problem exists and instead blame the user.

#4,
SP1 is the only thing that kept me on Vista. It was headed out the door until SP1 was installed, now it's a keeper.
Still has some issues, but SP1 is a major improvement. The network performance was deplorable in RTM. Now it's something that can be lived with. Very substantial improvement.

My problem is that the Vista delays created negative connotations to begin with. The nagging little issues like the file copies have exacerbated the situation. Additionally, legions of Open Source losers having no first-hand experience with Vista trashed it all over the net, and have so seeded the clouds of doubt that a monsoon couldn’t wash away the negativity. Vista will never catch XP’s install base; it will be up to Windows 7 to do that.
No matter what, MS should recognize the Vista name for what it is - an albatross, and never associate it with future versions of Windows.

rxcall, i think we are living in an echo chamber of tech sites and blogs. The average American (I assume no different for the rest of the world) hasn't even heard of Vista... let alone has a bad association with it.
