Detonator XP v21.81 For Windows 9*/XP/2000
Time: 16:03 EST/21:03 GMT | News Source: ActiveWin.com | Posted By: Byron Hinson

NVidia has posted up their new Detonator XP drivers (Det 4's). This release is 21.81 and there are downloads for Windows 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000 and XP.

NVIDIA® announced today the availability of its Detonator™ XP unified driver for it’s award-winning family of 3D graphics processing units (GPUs).  Detonator XP includes specific technology designed to unleash the power of the highly anticipated Windows® XP operating system. It also provides performance enhancements for Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows Me environments.  Detonator XP is available free of charge, and can be downloaded today.

“Our Unified Driver Architecture gives us the unique ability to give customers a free performance upgrade six months after a new GPU hits the market,” said Dan Vivoli, vice president of marketing at NVIDIA. “Detonator XP allows us to continue this tradition.  And, with Detonator XP’s XPress Link technology, it unleashes new hardware and software capabilities making it the ultimate driver environment for Windows XP.”

Detonator XP contains the new-patented Detonator XPress Link technology utilizing the patented Direct Memory Access (DMA) found on all NVIDIA hardware, Detonator Xpress Link provides a direct connection from the hardware to the operating system.  As a result, Detonator XPress Link assists in accelerating the new optimizations made in the I/O Subsystem and Memory Management portions of Windows XP’s core.  With Detonator XPress Link technology, NVIDIA is able to deliver the fastest 3D graphics performance on all Windows XP platforms.

Detonator XP also features a complete OpenGL® 1.3 ICD with NVIDIA extensions– allowing developers to create content that fully exposes the hardware features of NVIDIA’s GPUs.  Detonator XP also includes custom DirectX® pipelines specifically designed to fully accelerate Windows XP and all other operating systems. By way of these new enhancements, Detonator XP delivers up to a 50% performance gain in Microsoft DirectX and SGI OpenGL applications.

Detonator XP supports the entire TNT2™, GeForce™, GeForce2™, Quadro™, Quadro2, Quadro DCC and GeForce3 families of GPUs and is based on NVIDIA’s patented Unified Driver Architecture (UDA).  Through UDA, NVIDIA’s software drivers are compatible with past, present and future NVIDIA GPUs, and are top-to-bottom compatible with all currently manufactured versions of NVIDIA’s GPUs.

One of the things that bothered me about the last release 12.41 was that on my TNT2 card, it decided suddenly that the max refresh rate I should be allowed to use at 1024x768 was 72Hz. I reverted back to the last verison I had downloaded 12.21(I think) and was happy at 85Hz again.

I'll be curious to see how this one performs. Maybe I'll actually get one of them new fangled GeForce2 cards. :)

Don't expect anywhere near the 30-50% increase in performance with these drivers..I have noticed maybe 1 fps increase in 4 games so far.

The 30%-50% increase is what you'll see on a Geforce 3... On other cards it won't be quite so noticeable... trust me (on the GF3), it's there.

Oh joy. Sounds like exactly like what you don't want in a stable operating system.
<p>
The only time my Win2000 box has ever BSODed was with graphics issues. I'm doubting these are going to be much more stable.

This is a bit weird, but I guess with all the work that Nvidia has done on these drivers, they must of over look this one, not once, no twice but three times. If you decide to head on over to the nvidia site to download them and you wish to download via the FTP link, your be downloading version 12.41. The HTML link and all three Windows version, you be point to the location of the new drivers.

But with the FTP link, well not everyone is perfect, not even Nvidia. Hope this release turn out to be a good'em!!!!!!!!

These aren't "Windows Logo" signed for XP, I thought they were suppose to be.. Oh well, still seem to work fine with RC-2..

My 3DMark2001 score went from 4727 to 5059 with a GF3. I am a little disappointed.

An update:

I'm #7. It seems that the high framerates are due to the fact NVIDIA lowered the image quality on games. All my games look like crap now. If you have 3DMark 2001, check out the smoke during the flying dragon demo, it looks like 16bit!

I have seen more reports of this on other boards. These things are coming off my computer.

Will these drivers automaticly fix overlay problems with a tv tuner card? I got an old TNT2.

I installed the det 4's on my RTM XP pc with GForce 2 Pro 64, I lost my Display properties and ALL tabs except for the "Themes" tab. I ended up re-installed XP over this config to get BACK all the tabs...This happen to anyone else?

"NVIDIA® announced today the availability of its Detonator™ XP unified driver for it’s award-winning family of 3D graphics processing units (GPUs)."

It has spread to PRESS RELEASES. "It's" is not a posessive, people, it's a contraction.

I can see that education is definitely a dying virtue in this nation...<sigh>
