Microsoft Unveils Smartphone Advancements to Improve Ability to Work and Play With One Phone
Time: 12:31 EST/17:31 GMT | News Source: Microsoft Press Release | Posted By: Jonathan Tigner

Windows Mobile is improving smartphones to better meet people’s rapidly expanding work and personal needs, Microsoft Corp. today announced. At CTIA Wireless 2008, the company unveiled the newest version of Internet Explorer Mobile, which adds desktop-grade Web browsing to Windows Mobile phones. In addition, Microsoft announced Windows Mobile 6.1, an update for its Windows Mobile software that includes new time-saving features, easier phone navigation and management, and increased security safeguards.

The new version of Internet Explorer Mobile adds the ability to easily view full-screen Web pages and multimedia on the Web with a smartphone. By taking advantage of Internet Explorer 6 technologies and supporting established and upcoming industry standards such as H.264, Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight, the updated Internet Explorer Mobile gives people a rich mobile Internet experience. The update will be available to mobile phone partners in the third quarter of 2008, with the first Windows Mobile phones using the new version expected to be available by the end of 2008.

Windows Mobile 6.1 features several key updates based on customer feedback, including the capability to make the most critical information readily available at a glance, quicker phone setup, and enhanced features adapted for the small screen. In addition, if coupled with System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 or Exchange Server 2007 SP1, Windows Mobile 6.1 provides the best experience for IT professionals to manage mobile phones for businesses.

And here it is the usual problem:

IE Mobile: "The update will be available to mobile phone partners". What about customers? The "partners" make profits selling hardware; I am pretty sure that few lucky WM phones users will have the opportunity to download and use it in their already bought and paid phones.

Windows Mobile 6.1 Same as above.

Also: "available by the end of 2008" I am sorry but this should have been available one year ago.

Right, it usually takes these partners many many months before they offer updates.

This is the only downside of Microsoft not making its own mobile phone hardware... but it is a big downside for the users.

HTC are usually pretty good at releasing new Microsoft code but they've been quite slack recently.

On the plus side WM6.1 is MUCH faster in execution when compared to 6.0 plus the battery improvements are amazing.

once again MS snatches defeat from the jaws of victory.

after palm died MS had the mobile/pda space to themselves, in 2-3 years we saw little in the way of innovation or advancement. They nickled and dimed us for incremental features. Along comes the Iphone and the slumbering giants attempts a lame effort...truly pathetic.

It will take MS 1-2 years to have winmobile 7 see the light of day, by that time the Iphone will be light years ahead, leaving MS to play catch up.

@Redhook - I agree about Microsoft doing "next to nothing" worthwhile in the mobile space in those years and I also agree about them taking a year to catch up... but have you seen the hardware for the WM7 & 8 devices? Check out nVidia's APX2500... it easily blows the iPhone completely out of the water imho.

#7: No doubts that WM7, and WM8 even more, could be able to be a challenge to the iPhone but... the iPhone is here, WM7 no. When will it be available? 1 year from now? More? Less? I do not know but the sad reality is that, as you and other stated, MS "missed the train" here.
I do not know what will be the iPhone as well as Nokia devices one year from now but I am pretty sure that they will not sit, waiting for MS to catch-up. No matter how big or powerful you are trying to catch up with competitors that are ahead of you is hard, very hard.
Why the development of new WM build is so slow is behind me, but it is really jeopardizing MS future in one of the biggest, if not the biggest, segment of the market: cellular phones.

For "only available via operators" read not available for another 9 months while operators get rid of all their old phones that have previous versions of windows mobile and then spend an age deciding which manaufactors phone will go into their product portfolio.

MS should provide the mobile operating system available for download through technet as this at least allows those of us who want the latest and greatest OS to use it without having to buy yet another phone from an operator with yet another contract. I for one am sick and tired of not being able to use an OS of my choice on a device of my choice. Mobile operators are slow beasts, waiting for them is like watching paint dry.

Come on MS start treating the windows mobile OS like the rest of your operating systems!!
