A Microsoft executive involved with the company's Windows Live efforts outlined some of the company's ideas about cloud-based computing and social networking technologies today. The talk was presented by Brian Hall, general manager of the Windows Live Business Group, at the 2008 Merrill Lynch Technology Conference on May 6.
Hall predicted that applications will be moving to a world that combines the "best of the PC" with "the best of the Web."
He depicted a software past in which social networking was once typically enabled by just a few "siloed applications," such as e-mail and instant messaging. Microsoft entered this space early on with its Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger offerings.

It is interesting that MS's grand planning never comes to fruition.
then some company out of no where seizes the "social networking" buzz, myspace, facebook, linkedIn, et al.
.. this whole Live thing doesn't make sense to me. Oddly enough Live.com looks like google.com but in silverlight. And that whole "your space" thing has about 3 users.
so rather than making the Zune the best player it can be they focus on the "social networking" aspect of it. Who the phuck cares?
I have a zune, I can't even make a video playlist. Why do I have to convert my videos/movies to wmv to play it on the zune. And why does't the ZunePlayer allow for the that convertion? now I have to go BitTorrent and download a video conversation tool that actually works
and another thing..why can't ActiveWin keep me logged. I am using IE7 and I have to log in everytime I visit this site.

1 - "live spaces" has been around for "years" but MySpace was the big thing at the time, hence Live Spaces never got any traction. Since then other people have done startups with better ideas and quicker implementation.
2 - live.com does not require silverlight
3 - Zune is a pretty good player but the whole DRM situation that Microsoft was forced to play with, is not helping them at all.
3 - Videos work fine... but yes, Microsoft should add far more codecs. Mind you, to my knowledge you also cannot play DivX or Xvid on an iTouch/Phone, so its the same situation there.
4 - I couldn't agree more... but HOPEFULLY the new AW is arriving VERY SOON
