Microsoft Eyes 40 Percent of Smartphone Market by 2012
Time: 13:21 EST/18:21 GMT | News Source: PC World | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum

Microsoft is aiming to capture 40 percent of the smartphone market with Windows Mobile by the year 2012, an executive said Tuesday.

The target is ambitious considering the company's relatively small share of the market for smartphone operating systems today and stiff competition from the likes of Symbian, Apple's iPhone, RIM's BlackBerry, and newcomers such as Google's Android platform.

Microsoft's Windows Mobile OS went into around 11 million handsets in the company's fiscal year 2007, and it says it will reach nearly 20 million devices in fiscal year 2008, which ends June 30, said Eddie Wu, managing director of Microsoft's OEM Embedded Devices in Asia, on the sidelines of a news conference in Taipei.

40% seems a little bit too optimistic; if they could pull WM7 on the market by the end of 2008 and MS begin to update the OS directly I could easely see an increase but I am doubtful that they will be able toachieve any of these two conditions in a short timeframe.
If they could they should announcing it shortly in order to undermine the iPhone 2 software and hardware announcement, supposedly coming in June.

Maybe MS will miss that 40% mark and hit the mark they've carved out for Zune.... 4%.

Really, at this point in time the least most appealing choice of mobile OSs is Win Mobile. It's slow, cumbersome and ugly.

I own a Palm device with Win Mobile, but I can't imagine getting another Win Mobile device when Blackberry, Symbion and Apple have much offerings. Shucks even the lame Palm OS may be a more intuitive and faster OS.

Yeah, right!

Ballmer should stick to monkey dancing.

Olddog, ditto on the Palm.

If Microsoft really wants to gain market share, they should open up the cell phone platform so that OEMs can program for it. Also, allow users of an older version of Win Mobile to upgrade without having to shell out hundreds of dollars for a new cell phone in ordere to do so. Also, install "wizards" to be able to download e-mail from all the popular Internet based and application based e-mail clients.

My next cell phone is going to be the new iPhone. Sorry, borg . . .
