  Microsoft Security Essentials 4.3.216.0
Time: 11:55 EST/16:55 GMT | News Source: ActiveWin.com | Posted By: Robert Stein

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up-to-date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so you’re free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want—without interruptions or long computer wait times. Before installing Microsoft Security Essentials, we recommend that you uninstall other antivirus software already running on your PC. Running more than one antivirus program at the same time can potentially cause conflicts that affect PC performance.

When MS initially release Security Essentials it was a pretty effective AV program. Sometime during Windows 8 development they must have pulled some key engineers off of MSE and put them on W8 since MSE went from very good to the worst available in a matter of months in 2012. See the attached report from AV-test.org. Look at the Protection column. MSE is the absolute worst, by a wide margin, in preventing infections. http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/home-user/windows-7/novdec-2012.

MS needs to keep a dedicated and effective team on MSE if they want to win back customers, free or not. BitDefender now has a free version that, once the bugs are worked out, should be superb for home users. Until AV-test and AV comparatives show MSE is effective, I'm warning customers to stay away from it. Any commercial AV program is better than MSE at this point in time.

Avast seems to be a good one.

Right you are donpacman. Avast is also a highly rated free antivirus program, and performs well in the real world.

Don't be a bunch of cheapo morons. You can get a multi-user license for any of the top AV companies for peanuts. I bought a 3-user Kaspersky license for $45.
