Steve Wozniak: Microsoft resting on its laurels
Time: 10:23 EST/15:23 GMT | News Source: BBC | Posted By: Byron Hinson

Apple's co-founder Steve Wozniak has said that rival Microsoft has been "resting on" the markets it built up a "long, long time ago". He added that Steve Ballmer's time as the chief executive was not as significant as that of Bill Gates. Mr Wozniak told the BBC that one of the key reasons for the success of Apple was that despite being a big firm, it had remained nimble and innovative. He also gave his backing to Apple's current chief executive Tim Cook. "Steve jobs had very strong feelings about what makes a company great, what makes products great. He more-or-less chose Tim Cook to be in that role, in that position," Mr Wozniak told the BBC's chief business correspondent Linda Yueh.

I wonder if Woz thought that when he bought a Windows phone that he "loved".

How long can Wozniak ride on a dead mans coattail?

#1: What does your comment have to do with anything other than sour grapes? Is it not possible for him to love his Windows phone while believing MS is resting on its laurels?

#2: Oh please. Jobs would have been nowhere without the technical genius of Wozniak, and Wozniak would have been nowhere without the marketing genius of Jobs. It was very much a symbiotic relationship. To accuse Woz of riding Jobs' coattails shows just how little you actually know about computer history.

I know they had to install additional drainage around Jobs grave to carry off all the urine. ;)

What has Steve Wozniak done lately besides talk?

"resting on its laurels"

I was going to defend MS but the more I thought about it, other than xboxone/Kinect, possibly SharePoint and anti-skeumorphism design principles , I can't think of any product line where they are not reactionary. Take .Net, Office 365, and Windows 8 for example - they were all reactionary moves. When they do lead with things like Courier, the politics get in the way stifle innovation.

They have made great strides with products like SQL Server and Windows Server which are now truly Enterprise products but there is nothing leading about them other than ease of use.

So I don't think "resting on its laurels" is the right phrase. "Lack of vision" might be better.

One side note, for me, Windows 8 is a step in the right direction - although reactionary, it is a new concept that goes beyond the 40 year old metaphor of icons on a screen.

#4: Is the Internet down where you are? If you want to know what Woz is doing now, try looking and reading. Here's a start:

#5: You're bang on and I've been saying the same thing for the past 10 years now, at least.

#6: That's not quite true. For 10 years you've pretty much complained that everything MS does sucks. That's a little different than saying they lack vision.
