Internet Explorer 7 reaches 100 million installations
Time: 00:12 EST/05:12 GMT | News Source: Microsoft | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum

Tony Chor, Group Program Manager at Microsoft reports that Internet Explorer 7 has passed 100 millionth installations:

Iím pleased to report that on January 8th, we had the 100 millionth IE7 installation. However, even more important than installations is usage. According to WebSideStory (the company we use to measure browser usage), as of this week, over 25% of all visitors to websites in the US were using IE7, making IE7 the second most used browser after IE6. We expect these numbers to continue to rise as we complete our final localized versions, scale up AU distribution, and with the consumer availability of Windows Vista on January 30, 2007.

"In the same month that IE 7 more than doubled (from 8.8% to 18.3%), Firefox 2.0's share only climbed from 3.6% to 5.2%, notes Net Applications.

Firefox 1.5 still accounts for the majority of Firefox users.

Mozilla has considered, and postponed, an automatic update from Firefox 1.5 to 2.0; the auto upgrade is now scheduled for sometime this month."

I thought it was only the EVIL MICROSOFT that does automatic updates.

Will Mozilla's be optional ... or will they force it?

Prefetching automatically results in more Firefox hits in weblogs. Google prefetches for Firefox and Mozilla only. Firefox usage is grossly overrepresented.

"On some searches, Google automatically instructs your browser to start downloading the top search result before you click on it. If you click on top result, the destination page will load faster than before.

Google uses a special prefetching feature in Firefox and Mozilla web browsers to provide this functionality, so results prefetching is not available in Internet Explorer or other web browsers. You can disable prefetching in your web browser preferences, as described in the Mozilla Prefetching FAQ. In Firefox, you can disable prefetching by doing the following:

Type "about:config" the address bar.
Scroll down to the setting "network.prefetch-next" and set the value to "False".
With prefetching enabled, you may end up with cookies and web pages in your web browser's cache from web sites that you did not click on since prefetching happens automatically when you view Google search results pages."

When I originally commented I clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get 4 emails using the exact same comment. Is there any way you could eliminate me from that service? Thanks!
