Rumors About XP SP1 Product Activation Changes Not True
Time: 16:01 EST/21:01 GMT | News Source: WinInformant | Posted By: Julien Jay

A bizarre rumor about Microsoft making sweeping changing to its Product Activation technology in Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) is completely untrue, the company told me today. The rumor, which was started by a small technology enthusiast Web site, had Microsoft changing the product keys for all of its customers using volume licensing. This rumors has since spread across the Internet and been embellished in various ways, including a version I came across Thursday morning claiming that Microsoft was making the change so it could charge licensees yet again for SP1. Not so, says Microsoft.

"There is no truth in this rumor," Allen Nieman, the Lead Technical Product Manager for Licensing Technologies at Microsoft told me Thursday. "We are not changing the way volume licensing customers install or deploy Windows XP. We are not issuing volume licensing customers new product keys.

Uh oh. I think I started that SP1 would cost money rumor... :)

Didn't Paul Thurrott himslef start that rumor with one of his "e-mail from an insider" stories?

It's almost as good as the "Delayed Win2k SP3 because of Windows Installer 2.0" crap...

Real Paul or fake Paul, I still don't believe him. ;-)

It's probably just Sodajerk ... trying to start a fight ...

I often don't agree with Paul T's commentaries, but I've yet to have a reason to not trust his journalistic integrity.

Jerk has topped 1000 posts. I suspect he'd say it in his own name if he wanted to.

Paul's a good guy and usually right. Even though I have been critical of him in the past and sent him some nasty emails. :-)
