Bob. I got something I was thinking about sending to MS Wishlist about DRM. I think MS may be going this way with WMP due to the (currently disabled) send to feature in WMP9, but my idea is basically "DRM sharing". Take the Peter Gabriel release for example... And this doesn't just have to pertain to music or video. It can apply to any file. MS could add a new DRM flag for sharing. The default limit could be up to the content provider, but I think it would be better if it was always available to the user Set like 30 days as a default maximum that can be changed by the content provider if desired If I have DRM content that I want to "lend" to a friend, I just right-click on it and click share... Then I could send the file to my friend with a limitation on how many plays or days or hours, minutes, etc. they can preview or "borrow" the content. Other than the hard-coded max, the time allowed could be set by the lender While I have shared the content with the friend, I would still have full access rights to the shared content since the friend has no easy way of copying and keeping the content I could also share to multiple friends, maybe with a limit of concurrency, but not necessarily, This would allow for the proverbial "What if I want to let a friend borrow my CD" arguments This could also enable legal sharing on P2P sites since the files would be limited In the case of commercial products, links to buy the product could be included in the shared content. And in the case of a modem user that may not be able to download your content, you could burn the files to CD or it could be distributed on a web server. I also thought it could work sort of like Remote Assistence, where you send a request (share) to someone via email, messenger, etc., and the person you want to share with is notified that you have content to share, who sent the content, what the content is, and how it would be shared (streamed w/ bandwidth requirements), downloaded, etc. Then you would choose wheter to accept it. ---------------------------------------------- Writing hardcore C{#} to create slick, tight code.

If any MS guys are here, please feel free to add to this discussion, and to take this idea to the right people. If Apple releases aan implementation of this, you know where it came from [emote|;)] ---------------------------------------------- Writing hardcore C{#} to create slick, tight code.

It could also work on a "check out" basis where you can't use it unless the friend has "checked it in" to you. ---------------------------------------------- [emote|:)][emote|:)][emote|:)] I'm a happy man! [emote|:)][emote|:)][emote|:)]

i'm thinking there could be issues with your idea, depending on other granted rights for instance if you buy 5 plays of a movie, then it would be OK to share it with someone. DRM would still ensure only 5 plays of the content occurred but, if the grant were for 24 hours of use, then sharing wouldn't be too good, since that basically enables your friend to not have to buy it too ---------------------------------------------- [emote|:)][emote|:)][emote|:)] I'm a happy man! your idea would be a defense to the content providers that they haven't trouned on "fair use" but they also can defend their copyrights ---------------------------------------------- [emote|:)][emote|:)][emote|:)] I'm a happy man! [emote|:)][emote|:)][emote|:)]

But the sharing could be limited depending on the content provider. In the case of something like a movie, it could limit you to a certain amount of minutes and say 1-3 plays. ---------------------------------------------- Writing hardcore C{#} to create slick, tight code.
