It may be that the DVD software player from Compaq isn't compatible with WinXP. Suggest uninstalling it and purchasing one of the WinXP DVD player plug-ins (Intervideo makes a good one). ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf

I have a pioneer 106s dvd-rom that works in every windows but windows xp, ive never found a resolution. But it's probably a hardware isssue for me. Anyway, do these things and tell me which one fixes it. -go to the compaq website and download any updates, such as bios updates -download the latest driver for your display -dxdiag.exe - do the video tests -try playing a dvd in windows media player -see what your dvd decoder is by typing dvdupgrd.exe /detect , verify it shows the decoder is for windvd -update your motherboard and chipset drivers -try other dvd's, make sure you dont have a problem with 1 dvd -change the ide controller to PIO Mode see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q310751 , in device manager you want to double click on ide/atapi controllers, right click the primary ide channel, and follow that article. Try these troubleshooters: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q321641 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q308012 -gosh
