Well in order to help i would need to know more info such as -who made the modem -the exact error -did it ever work? If this worked before try system restore. If you dont know who made the modem check device manager. Just go to start > run > type: compmgmt.msc, then double click device manager, and modems If your computer is an oem (gateway, hp, dell), go to there website and search on your model number, and look for any modem updates. If you still dont know who made your modem check c:\windows\upgrade.txt for the manufactor. Get the exact error and search support.microsoft.com on the error number. Try hyper terminal. Hyperterminal does not use windows, therforre if hperterminal doesnt work your modem may be physically bad. Hyperterminal is %programfiles%\Windows NT\hypertrm.exe -gosh
