First, your not stupid 'cause you asked for help. Your only stupid if you don't. Sounds like you have a sound card that has native WinXP drivers. WinXP includes quite a number of drivers for video and sound cards. You didn't mention which card, but if it's something like a SB Live! or one that's couple of years old, then WinXP probably includes the drivers. You said you were trying to install "older" drivers - first - are they designed for WinXP? If not, don't use 'em. If they are, then go to Control Panel, then Performance and Maintenance, and then System. Click on Hardware, then the Device Manager button and locate the sound card.
