Obviously this is hardware, because it's a clean hard drive. Just because it worked fine on win98 or whatever, doesnt mean itll work in winxp. The reason winxp is SO stable is because it takes over many of the functions of the bios. For this reason winxp (and winnt and win2k) have something called a HAL - hardware abscration layer. Winxp is even more pickier than win2k, so what i'm saying is the hardware might be fine, but it might not be COMPATIBLE.

The only solution is to make a 'flat' on the hard drive. If you have problems making a flat/running setup from a flat, then you need to manually check the hardware.

You need 2 things not on the winxp cd, smartdrv and xcopy. I would recommend download the win98se bootdisk from bootdisk.com, it comes with smartdrv, if xcopy isn't on it copy xcopy.exe, xcopy32.exe, xcopy.mod onto the floppy also.

Once u have this floppy with the xcopy stuff and smartdrv, start the pc with it.

Then type this:

smartdrv
xcopy d:\i386\*.* c:\i386 (if d is your cdrom) (press D for directory)

After it's done, type c:, then cd i386, then winnt.exe. Now winxp setup will come on, you can take out the winxp cd now.

Any problems, you need to read the hcl.txt file located on the winxp cd, or go to www.microsoft.com/HCL and check each piece of hardware.
