| I'm @ssuming this is Norton's firewall you're referring to. Any software firewall, when first installed, will give alerts when a program first accesses the internet. If you choose that it's o.k., then the alert for THAT program should stop. The advantage is that you're alerted if an unknown program (spyware or trojan) tries to access the internet, you have the opportunity to kill it. Windows XP firewall does a good job at stoping incoming attacks, but doesn't stop those created by outgoing access (as noted above). However, regular use of spyware should prevent that. FWIW, I have a router with a hardware firewall, along with WinXP's software fireall installed.
