Does it happen in safe mode? If so it might be bios or video card. restart the pc, press f8, select safe mode.
What do the logs say? Right click my computer, left click manage, double click event viewer, right click on application and system, and left click on clear all events (dont save them). Reproduce the problem, and look at event viewer again, does it log anything?
Try windowsupdate there is an update for quake3, also your video card has major known issues with xp, im surprised you got it installed.

ok cool.
First, is this a clean install or upgrade? Also, is this a Dell dimension 8100? Ive seen an issue just like yours on a Dell.
Second, since this happens in safe mode, that's pointing to a virus, hardware, bios, display adapter, or deep OS corruption. IN safe mode, we're using the standard SuperVGA display driver, so probably your display driver is ok. Im wondering how old is your bios? WHen you first start the pc, your looking at the bios. It should show the manufactor, date, and version. What year was it made? If its 2 years or older, i would recommend updating the bios. So if its made by award, go to award.com, download any update for the bios, and flash it.
The reason why you might be having this when it worked fine in win98, is winxp does a lot of stuff at the hardware level, which is why its so stable. WIn98 could care less about your hardware, but winxp is gonna be more picky.
Also, have u downloaded an updated driver for your video card? The reason i ask is because most display drivers in winxp just function, they dont have any advanced properties. I bet if you were to update the display driver, it might have more advanced features and maybe fix this.
