OK....when did this problem start? Something like this is usally caused by either an incorrect installation of some sort of cd/dvd burning program, or two similar burning programs conflicting with each other. Also, note that WinXP will usually recognize all CD/DVD drives. Drivers for CD/DVD drives haven't really been needed since Win95 days. Let us know on the above (i.e. when the problem started). This will help to figure out a solution. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS, Nikon D2Hs and D100

Couple of questions. You say your computer recognizes them: 1. When you open up Windows Explorer and click on "My Computer", do they appear under "Devices with Removable Storage"? If so, insert a data CD (application CD, CD with your backup on it, etc). Wait about 15-30 seconds and then click on the drive. Advise if the drive shows any files on the CD, or of any error messages. 2. If under "My Computer", they don't appear, go to Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance/System. Cliick on the Hardware tab and Device Manager. If the drives are marked with an exclamation, then there is a problem. It's usually related to an invalid entry in the registry. Caused by either an incorrect installation or uninstallation of a program. Advise on the above. You may be looking at either reinstalling Windows and your applications, or having someone else do it for you. An alternate way to backup data other than via CD/DVD is to purchase either an external drive (80gigs at $100) or if you have a digital camera, copy the files to a digital media card. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS, Nikon D2Hs and D100

Three things to try (all in order from easiest to worst case scenerio) 1. Download and run RegClean http://www.download.com/RegClean/3000-2094_4-881470.html?tag=lst-0-1 This is a low level registry fixer from Microsoft. It may or may not work to fix this problem. 2. Try the registry hacks from Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316529 3. Worst case scenerio - do a clean install of WinXP and all your applications. NOTE: This will completely erase all of your data and stuff, so make sure you back up everything beforehand (per my prior post, either to an external drive, flash card, whatever) Insert the WinXP install disc and reboot. You'll see a text message saying to press any key to go into setup mode. Do that. Follow the menu to completely delete the partition and reinstall WinXP. Once that's done, install the drivers for your video card, sound card, etc. Then install all your applications. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS, Nikon D2Hs and D100

This problem is usually related to either an improper install/uninstall of some sort of CD/DVD buning software, or even a malicious web site. I've had it happen once because of an improper uninstall. Best recommendation - get either an external HD or, if you have a digital camera - use a couple of compact flash cards and back up all your data (i.e. everything in the My Documents folder, Favorites and e-mail addresses and stuff). From there, do a clean install. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS, Nikon D2Hs and D100
