Best way to share the connection and protect both computers is with a router. Connect the cable modem to the router, and then each computer to the router. Routers usually have built-in hardware firewalls, which is an added plus.

It can...but I wouldn't recommend it. It involves using ICF (Internet Connection Sharing.
Connect the cable modem to a USB slot, and then use a crossover cable to connect to the other. Set up ICF on the computer to which the modem is plugged into.
One big downside of using ICF is that the host computer needs to be on in order for the other to access the internet. With a router, you don't have to worry about it, plus you get added security.

Go to Help and Support under the Start button and type in Internet Connection Sharing. There are a number of tutorials and information on how to set this up.
You also might want to post the question to the Windows XP newsgroup on Microsoft's website

FWIW, when we originally signed up for DSL, the modem we got included both a RJ45 and USB connection, and the instructions to set up Internet Connection Sharing were as I described above.

Since your ISP provided you with the cable modem, I'd suggest that you contact them regarding hooking it up. If the cable modem includes connections for both USB and network cable, then it should work.
