First, when WinXP starts up, do ou hear the start up sounds? Can you play audio files that have been copied to your computer? It sounds (no pun intended) like there is a problem with the CD/DVD drive - i.e. dirt has gotten in there or the drive has crapped. If other sounds play (as noted above) then the problem ISN'T the soundcard or drivers. First, get a cd drive cleaner (Maxell makes a good one) and run that. Then, check to make sure your CD's are clean. If that doesn't work, then the drive may be bad. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D2Hs and D100

Time for some computer forensics. Before the problem occurred, did you download something, or install a new program? If so, which one? Last time I had this happen was with an older version of RealPlayer (the one where Real included spyware). If this is the case, uninstall that program, reboot and see what happens. One other option is to use a registry cleaner - there's a good one called Advanced Windows Care that I can personally recommend. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D2Hs and D100
