Based on what you describe, the wireless network you're trying to connect to DOES have security enabled. That's why your laptop can't connect. It's not your laptop that h@ssecurity enabled, but the network you're trying to connect to. Who set up the wireless router? You should check with them. By chance is this at college?

OK - first, what type of laptop do you have (be specific - make/model, etc). It sounds like the driver for the wireless adapter in your laptop isn't enabled Go under Control Panel/Systems (under cl@ssic view) and click on the hardware tab and then Device Manager. Check under Network Adapters to see what's there. There should be two - one for the wired ethernet port (most laptops have one) and one for the wireless. If both are there, and both are working, disable the wired port.
If all is well there, run the network setup wizard to try and get it to connect.
BTW, you WILL want to enable security on your wireless router - otherwise others can sponge off of your connection and hack into your system.
