I have been trying to solve the sound problem of my comp(desktop) for quite a while. I have been looking through a lot of forums and tried whatever I could but still get back my sound. In sound and Audio device property, it writes "No Audio Device" in Volumn tab and I couldn't adjust the volumn because it's gray out. The "Sound playback" and "Voice playback" in the Audio and Voice tab respectively are gray out as well.
I believe I have the sound card, and the sound drivers is installed and working properly.
Under ctrl panel->System->Hardware->device management->sound, video and game controllers, there are:
"Audio codecs
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
Video Codecs"
and none of them have '!' or "?" beside them. And when I checked the property, all of them are working properly. And when starting up windows I could hear a "beep".
I also check the ctrl panel -> Adminstrative Tools->Services->Windows Audio, It is started and the startup type is "Automatic".
I have Runned the DXDIAG and found that when testing DirectSound, it has notes in the following:
"DirectSound test results: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT = 0x80070057 (Invalid argument(s))"
And when I tested the Music using the port "Microsoft Synthesizer", it will then have the notes in the following:
"DirectMusic test results: Failure at step 6 (Activating the IDirectMusicPort): HRESULT = 0x80070057 (Invalid argument(s))"
However, if I test the Music using the ports "SoundMAX Digital Audio", "Microsoft MIDI Mapper[Emulated]" and "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth[Emulated]', I do hear the music playing.
After trying all these, I really do not know what is the problem with my sound device. Could someone help me , please?
millions of thanks! [emote|(&)]

First, check Dell's website to see if there is an updated driver. If so, install that and see what happens. You may also want to contact Dell's tech support as that should be the first line of contact and @ssistance.
Also, check to make sure that the speakers and connectec correctly.

I have went to Dell's website and find the sound drivers for my Dell Precision 370, there were two drivers, one was newer than the one I've been using. So I installed that one, however the software cannot be installed, because it says"cannot detect the required component".
Actually, everytime I reinstalled the sound driver, I check the Sound and Audio Device Properties, I saw that only the "Sound Recording", "MIDI Music Playback" under Audio tab and "Voice recording" under Voice tab change to normal color, the rest are still gray.

This problem is all over the place, try google with "No Audio Device" (include the quotes). Many people have posted this question since 2003. I haven't found answers though I have been searching for four days now. AFAIK it is not brand related (not PC-brand nor audio-card-brand). It is a windows-XP bug or a bug in one of its components. It seams to have gotten worse after SP2 was introduced, not sure though.

It's not a WinXP bug. The issue is related to onboard media controllers (i.e. sound card chips hardwired to the mobo) where drivers were not provided to MS when WinXP/XP2 were released.
There are two ways to try to get the driver:
1. Check with either the computer mfgr or mobo mfgr website for the correct driver
2. Go under Control Panel/System/Device Manager and delete all Sound controllers and then reboot and let WinXP search for them (both via the internet and on the computer. I've had better than a 95% success rate at correcting this issue using this method.

OK, fair enough, but we seem to agree that it is not specific for a certain brand, do we?

Tried that (again). The result is still the same; the device manager reports everyting is OK but sound service reports "No Audio Device". Just to be clear, the on-board (ASUS) audio is disabled. BTW, I could not uninstall the codecs and some other stuff listed as a sound device in the device manager. Perhaps clearing all would help but how do I remove these system drivers such as: "Audio codecs" and "legacy audio drivers" and "Media control Devices" (2X) ?
The right click menu has no uninstall option for these "drivers".

At first a Diamond??? card. I suspect it is some Taiwaneese clone card based on a Vortex AU8820C0 chip. And because I thought it was broken I bought a Sound Blaster Audigy SE card, which is currently in the system.
I am now under the impression the old card wasn't broken at al, but suffered from similar software problems.

@ssuming the SB Audigy SE card is still in the system, have you downloaded/installed the drivers for it? And if so, does it work?

@Jedi Master: Yes, SB Audigy is in at the moment. I downloaded the software package for the audigy SE card directy from Creative's web site.
@Ragulrocks: What set-up are you reffering to? In the BIOS set-up I have disabled the on-board audio. I have tried several bios settings without ressult.
I think Jedi has a good point. Perhaps the audio server somehow tries to connect to a legacy driver or whatever. But I am unable to disable the legacy stuff. At least not from within the device manager. But that is just a guess.
I think the problem started after installing SP2. The problem is that my HD crashed and after I exchanged it I installed from another windows-CD that included SP2 out of the box. So at first I blamed faulty hardware. That is some 6 months ago (had to save some money for a new Audio card [emote|:(]. I have been without audio all that time. During that periods the old card was in the system. The old "Vortex" card was also in while I installed WinXP-SP2.

Again, it is NOT a SP2 issue. If I understand you correctly, there were 2 soundcards in your system?
What Ragul is referring to is that if your motherboard includes onboard sound, you need to disable it in the BIOS. Usually by pressing F1 or F2 at startup, it'll take you to the BIOS. From there you can disable it.

OK, Yes the on-board sound is, and w@sswitched off in the bios set-up.
No, I never had two boards in the system at the same time. I replaced one with the other because I thought the problem was caused by faulty hardware. Because the problems continued after replacing the sound card, apparently the old sound card was not deffective after all. The fact that the two cards are from a different type and use different drivers may tell us someting.
What I am going to try next is:
1. Remove the SB card and start windows. (should remove all SB drivers).
2. Stop windows and put the old Diamond card in.
3. Start winddows (should install the diamond drivers).
4. See what happens and if no sound:
5. Remove Diamond, start windows, stop windows, put SB in, start windows, etc.
Cheers, Theo

Try Control Panel, Administrative Tools,Component Services, Services and Check If Windows Audio is enabled, sometimes this stops Windows loading the Audio if it is disabled.

After completing a Windows update, I am having the “No Audio Device” error (not able to have sound). I also got the following error at start up: The instruction at “0x745f2780” referenced memory at “0x00000000”. The memory could not be read.
The startup error was fixed by:
1. Boot into safe mode (hold F8 key when starting the computer)
2. Disable automatic updates in Windows
3. Reboot system into normal mode
4. Do a manual Windows update
5. Enable automatic updates in Windows
4. Reboot once again
However, I continue with the “No Audio Device” problem.
I got the following tip:
Go to "Start"-\"control Panel"-\"Administrative Tools"-\"Component Services". This will pull up a separate window, on the left click "services (local)" from the tree. Go down to the "windows audio" service. If the service is on "disabled" or "manual"; right click and select "properties" under "startup type" change to "automatic"- click apply. click "start". Reboot!
It did not work for me.
I notice on the Administrative Tool; Window Audio box the following:
Path to executable:
C\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe –k netsvcs
The svchost.exe does not seem right.
I still have not audio.

Hi.
I had this problem and have just solved in by a method based on advice I found somewhere else on the Web.
On the desktop, right-click on "My Computer".
Click on "Manage".
Click on "Services & Applications".
This brings up a list headed "Services".
Scroll down to "Windows Audio".
Double-click on it, then on "Recovery" tab.
This brings up three windows for what Windows should do in the event of failure: on the first occasion, on the second occasion and on subsequent occasions.
The options are "Take no action" and "Restart the service".
I found them all set to "Take no action", and reset them all to "Restart the service".
Windows then tried to restart the service, succeeded in doing so and I had my Audio Device back.
Hope it works for you.

I want to say a HUGE thankyou to Dickie56, I had the same problem as Aileen, and have searched lots of different forums for a solution - but none of them were any use, until I came across your advice.
I followed your instructions, and I have audio back on my computer. Thank you so much, you've made my day!!!!!

A little more information is needed. First, when did the "no audio driver" issue start? After a reinstall of WinXP? Also, what are the specifics for your computer, hardware wise? i.e. is it a retail or Papa San "custom" build? Knowing more about your computer hardware will go a long way to providing a solution.
Also, post the information on a NEW thread.
