I have an old, self-@ssembled desktop with Soltek SL-75DRV4 motherboard and Athlon XP 1600+ CPU which started behaving strangely recently. It never starts on the first attempt. On pressing the power switch a second time it boots but not always : on the second attempt, the CPU and case fans start and the red LED on the mobo glows which shows that power is going to the RAM but the POST beep does not come and the system does not boot. The light on the DVD drive blinks as usual at the start up but not the FDD light. The green light indicating power supply at the front of the case lights up and remains on till switched off but the yellow light indicating HDD activity does not light up. Strangest part of it is that it does not happen always. After such a failure, if the computer is left switched off and tried a couple of hours later, it boots, albeit, again after the power switch is pressed twice. Once the system boots, I can work on it for hours without any further hitch.
And it invariably fails to boot when the system is restarted, for instance after a software upgrade.
Recently it started failing to show the correct time and I replaced the CMOS battery but then the system just refused to boot at all. I replaced the old battery and the system booted - after the usual hit and miss attempts. This may not be of much importance, but the time seems to be correct after that incident.
The system was @ssembled way back in 2002 and I never had any problems whatsoever till about six months ago when I had frequent auto shutdown in the midst of working. Motherboard monitor showed an unusuallly high temparature at that time and I replaced the heat sink/fan combo of the CPU and now CPU temparature remains within 45-58 degree celcius and case temparature within 37.
After that I had to format the HDD and had a tough time installing XP SP2. Then the Video driver update (I have an ASUS NVidia GeForce4 4200 128MB card) disabled most of the 3D functionalities (conflict with Direct X) which somehow I rectified. During that period I flashed my BIOS and except doing that (and adding a USB card for 2.0 functionality) no change has been made to system since it was built. My system is kept on a wooden table without direct contact to the floor. I have switched power connectors going to the drives, replaced the data cable for HDD, checked for the mobo touching the case, but nothing. Oh yes, sometimes I feel static electricity build-up on my case when I touch it. Power is supplied through an UPS.
I am sorry for the length of my post as I don't know whether I am leaving out some important info.
Is it my power supply? Is it my motherboard? Or my BIOS upgrade? Please help.

Could be either (or both) the power supply or mobo. It wouldn't be the BIOS upgrade (if the upgrade failed, then the 'puter wouldn't boot...period).
You might want to spend some $$ to have it diagnosed (rather than randomly swapping parts).

Thanks for your reply. I considered doing just that when in a forum I came across a similar - almost identical - problem faced by a person who had a Fujitsu-Siemens computer. He took the system to the co's service center where its mobo was diagnosed to be the culprit and was replaced. He brought the system back home and found that he had brought back the problem too! Obviously he was furious at this and vowed not to buy another system from the co. The thread died there - if I remember correctly - and I could not follow it up. I forgot the name of the forum as well. Any suggestions, anybody?

By the way, my BIOS upgrade did not fail and completed successfully.

I have same motherboard, basically same problem. Additionally, XP locks up periodically. I got the computer from my wife, so I don't know its exact history, but she claims that it had no problems until she moved from college about three years ago. She also installed an ethernet card about the same time.
I've had the computer for two weeks. Observed the problems initially. Tested the memory and found several failures. On a hunch, I turned off overclocking, and everything seemed to work well. However, just this morning, the computer no longer posts. The computer itself is on, but the keyboard, mouse, and monitor appear to be off. I'll p@ss along any information I find.
Sid.
